This specimen was lot 3119 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $13,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "1747 MF 2 escudos. Mexico City mint. VF-35 (NGC). Types as above. Medium gold with orange highlights in the peripheral areas. Another example of the popular and charming locally rendered imaginary bust of Ferdinand VI. A perfectly pleasing coin for the grade, and perhaps more scarce than the 8 escudos of the same design type. Finer and better struck than the Norweb coin. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. This "imaginary bust" type was struck 1747 only and is the rarest of all Mexican two escudos.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold, .199 troy oz AGW. This specimen: 6.77 grams, 22.90 mm diameter.
