This specimen was lot 38727 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/2 Rupee, 1939-(C). Calcutta Mint. George VI. NGC MS-64." This half rupee was struck at the Calcutta mint at the beginning of World War Two. This date comes in several varieties, this one being the "large head" type. In 1940, the coin was reduced to 0.500 fine silver and ceased production in 1945.
Recorded mintage: 3,300,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 5.83 g, 0.917 fine silver, 24 mm diameter, reeded edge.
