This specimen was lot 701 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $54. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRAN: Mohammad Reza Shah, 1941-1979, 5 rials, SH1324 (1945), PCGS graded MS64." This denomination was struck SH 1322-1329 for Reza Shah, who had previously ousted the Qajars. Most dates are common. Among other reforms, the traditional AH calendar, based on lunar months, was dropped in favor of the SH calendar, which matched the Gregorian calendar except that its start date was that of the Hegira. Thus, SH 1324 = 1945 AD. In SH 1310, a new mint was built in Tehran and German equipment installed and new denominations introduced. The pahlavi was raised in weight to match the British sovereign.
