Austria 1685-MM 6 kreuzer

This specimen was lot 2824 in Stephen Album sale 41 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2021), where it sold for $84. The catalog description^[1] noted, "AUSTRIA: Leopold I, 1657-1705, AR 6 kreuzer, 1685, initials MM, Vienna Mint issue, struck with roller dies, EF-AU." Six kreuzer were struck at Vienna (shown here), Graz (KM 1233, 1288, 1317), Neuburg (KM 1234.1, 1234.2), St.-Veit (KM 1257, 1307, 1322, 1334) and Hall (KM 1340, 1366, 1374). Most are common, including this one, struck 1661-65, 1674-92. The "MM" stands for mintmaster Mathias Mittelmayer, who served several terms at Vienna 1679-1708. Additional mints (Breslau, Kremnitz and Prague) exist but are filed under their respective provinces. During Leopold's reign, the six kreuzer was one-twentieth of a thaler.
