This specimen was lot 33597 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "Catherine I Poltina (1/2 Rouble) 1726-CΠБ F12 NGC, St. Petersburg mint. Bust left variety. A rather scarce variety for this minor that comes almost universally in heavily circulated states, the piece at hand still preserving a perceivable strength of detail both in Catherine's bust and the reverse eagle for the grade, and the whole planchet softly toned." The SCWC notes several poltinas were struck for Catherin I in 1726, including KM 173, 175.1, 175.2, 176.1, all scarce to rare. Catherine was Peter the Great's second wife and was made empress regnant on his death in 1725. Altho dominated by prince Menshikov and the rest of the privy council, she succeeded in reducing the size of the army and provided tax relief to the long-suffering peasantry.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 14.22 g, 0.729 fine silver.
