This specimen was lot 41398 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $36,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Seldom Seen Peter I Ruble Issue, RUSSIA. Ruble, 1714/3. Red (Moscow) Mint. Peter I (the Great). NGC VF Details--Mount Removed. Overdate variety. Despite exhibiting a mount removal, this crown stands as an INCREDIBLY RARE type that is always much desired. The overdate is rather clear, and the level of detail remaining is highly pleasing." The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. Many ruble types were issued only briefly and can be dated even if they don't bear dates, such as this one from Peter the Great. This type is elusive and expensive. The rubles of Peter the Great were about 28 grams but shrank to 20 grams by the end of the reign of Catherine the Great. This one is mintmarked "MOCKOBCKI" ("Moscow"), which we have shortened to "M" for the page title.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.44 g, 0.729 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-1651; KM-149; Bit-810 (R2).
