Sincona sale 18, lot 2243

This specimen was lot 2243 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 1,200 (about US$1,581 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"40 Francs 1809. Toulouse Selten. Sehr schön. (empire of France, Napoleon I, forty francs of 1809, Toulouse mint, rare, very fine.)"

While the 1809-A is fairly common, the 1809-M and 1809-W are rare. The type was struck 1809-13 with 1810-W, 1811-A and 1812-A being the common dates.

Recorded mintage: 1,384.

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz, this specimen 12.83 g.
