This specimen was lot 527 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €400 (about US$539 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, HERZOGTUM August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. Reichstaler 1665, Zellerfeld. Hausknechtstaler. Sehr schön. (duchies of Brunswick-Luneburg and Brunswick Wolfenbuttel, Augustus the Younger, 1635-66, thaler of 1665, Zellerfeld mint. Very fine.)"
This type was struck 1664-66 in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and is among the more common thalers of the day. The "wild man" design was popular in Brunswick and Hannover at the time and appeared on many different thalers and even on minor coinage, such as this half thaler. Duke August II ruled 1634-66.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
