This specimen was lot 51221 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 1/4 Real, 1813-L. Lima Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC F-12. Emanating from the most SCARCE date of the issue, this piece remains wholesome and problem-free despite showing plenty of circulation. All features including the date display clearly, and a rustic smoky tone gives the coin added visual appeal. From the EMO Collection." Two types of cuartillas were struck at the beginning of the series: KM 99 (portrait type) struck 1792-96 and KM 102.1 (lions/castles without value) struck 1794-96. Both are scarce compared to the regular lions and castles type struck 1796-1821, of which an example is shown here. The SCWC divides the cuartillas of Charles IV from those of Ferdinand VII but there was no change in design.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.84 g, 0.896 fine silver.
Catalog reference: Cayón-14999, EMO-500 (Plate coin); KM-108; Cal-264.
