Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 72116
SB1122-72116r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72116 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Reales, 1813-L JP. Lima Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS AU-53. An eye-catching piece full of luster and covered with a stately warm toning. The crisp details display handsomely on this coin's brilliant surfaces. An uncommonly attractive example of the type. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This specimen is one of a series struck 1811-21 during the reign of Ferdinand VII (1808-33). As a class, colonial coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, tho it is more available than the remaining mints. However, Harris[2] noted finding about one-fourth as many Peruvian four reales of Charles IV as that of Mexico, so it is safe to say that this type is scarce. Assayer "JP" is noted for the years 1803-23.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15688, KM-116; Cal-1067.
