Eliasberg lot 3091
Mexico 1734Mo 1 escudo rev Eliasberg 3091.jpg
Another example, also an overdate

This specimen was lot 3091 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1495. The catalog description[1] noted, "1734/3 MF 1 escudo. Mexico City mint. AU-55 (NGC). Small head of Felipe V to right, legends around/type as above. Lustrous medium gold with orange highlights, shallow scratch on the king's forehead and thin scratch under bust, very attractive. A lovely example of the date or a fine type coin. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. This type, the only one showing the bust of Philip V, was struck 1732-47. A regular date is noted in the SCWC besides the overdate shown here.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine gold, .100 troy oz AGW. This specimen: 3.32 grams, 18.70 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Cayón-9576, Fr-11, KM 113.
