Ponterio sale 150, lot 9087

This coin was lot 9087 in Ponterio sale 150 (Los Angeles, August 2009), where it sold for $9,775. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Carlos and Johanna, Early Series. 2 Reales Assayer R, Gothic Assayer's Letter, (oMo-oMo), ND (1536) Francisco del Rincon. This piece is among the very first Two Reales struck in Mexico and the New World, as it was produced with all gothic punches in both obverse and reverse legends including the 'M'. The combination of this with the unabridged spelling of 'PLVSVLT' would suggest it being struck very early during the first year of mint production. Virtually full legends, well struck on a large planchet with much of the outer border of dots visible. One of the nicest examples we have seen. Minor doubling, RARE and highly important, VERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE." The "Carlos and Johanna" coinage of 1536-55 is complicated and difficult to disentangle as records are sparse and the coins are not dated. Ponterio[1] gives details of the latest research. The early series of 1536-41 is rare in all denominations.

Recorded mintage: Unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver, .199 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 10; Nesmith-4; Cal-type-78#107, Cayón-3085.
