This specimen was lot 238 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £9,500 (about US$14,713 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos II (1665-1700), cob 4 escudos, 1695 L, all four digits of date, the mintmark and assayer's mark very clear, with a full shield and most of denomination IIII also legible, rev., 'jewelled' cross, with arms decorated with points, extremely fine and particularly clear, very rare thus." All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. This type is listed for 1679-1701. Most specimens lack dates.
