The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1785-SF Popayán, AU55 NGC, a choice coin with flashy prooflike mint luster and instant eye appeal." This type was struck 1772-89 at Bogotá and Popayán and is perhaps the most common Spanish colonial gold coin. In 1785, the purity was reduced from .901 to .875 fine.
