Sedwick sale 34, lot 1211
Sed34-1211r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1211 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bogota, Colombia, cob 1/2 real, 1653, no assayer, rare. Good full monogram, bold but off-center cross with crude but certain 53 of date (the 3 with oddly horizontal base with serif, a match with the photographed example in Restrepo) visible before HISP-, also with clear PHIL- of king's name to right of monogram, lightly toned AXF. Pedigreed to the Clyde Hubbard Collection." This type was struck 1628-55 for Philip IV. Nearly all survivors lack legible dates and therefore the SCWC doesn't list any dates, altho the Santa Fé mint probably operated continuously during that period.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 1.34 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón unlisted, Restrepo-M16.6; Cal-611; KM-8 (unlisted date).
