Colombia 1654-NR PoRAS 8 reales
This specimen was lot 1206 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bogota, Colombia, cob 8 reales, 1654, assayer PoRAS, unlisted assayer for date, NGC VF details / sea salvaged. Very bold full date and right pillar, with top of left pillar also bold just inside of the bottom of a clear (Po)RA(S) assayer, the first we have seen for this date (the only others we know have been PoRS), deeply toned, mostly only lightly corroded but with about half of the cross side heavily so and with crude edge." This type was struck 1651-65 for Philip IV. Nearly all survivors lack legible dates and therefore many dates are missing from the SCWC, altho the Santa Fé mint probably operated continuously during that period. This specimen still has a legible date despite losing 29% of its mass to corrosion.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 19.09 grams.
