This specimen was lot 76016 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. Cent, 1878. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS PROOF-63 Red Brown. This SCARCE issue flashes with red proof brilliance and accents of burnished brown. Certain to please in this near-Gem state of preservation. Ex: Sinnathuray Collection." This one cent piece was struck for Mauritius in 1877-78, 1882-84, 1888-90, 1896-97 and is the first coin of that denomination issued for that island along with an accompanying ten, twenty, two and five cent pieces. Its price ascends rapidly with grade. The 1878 is the scarcest date. The island remained under British rule until 1968.
Recorded mintage: 250,000 plus a few proofs.
