This specimen was lot 42496 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. Cent, 1877. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS PROOF-63 Brown. An exceedingly elusive and charming example when encountered in proof, this center delivers pleasingly defined details, with soft brilliance and touches of blue throughout." This one cent piece was struck for Mauritius in 1877-78, 1882-84, 1888-90, 1896-97 and is the first coin of that denomination issued for that island along with an accompanying ten, twenty, two and five cent pieces. The London issue was struck only in proof but 700,000 were struck at Heaton. The island remained under British rule until 1968.
