This specimen was lot 75765 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal (States of the Church). 10 Baiocchi, 1850-R Year IIII. Rome Mint. Pius IX. PCGS MS-61." The first coinage reform in the Papal States was implemented in the early 1830's during the reign of Gregory XVI (1831-46). All the doppie, zecchini, guili, testoni, etc., were dropped in favor of a silver scudo divided into one hundred baiocchi. The coinage was reformed to use centesimi and lire in 1867 but the Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended.
Recorded mintage: 89,350 (years IIII and V).
Specification: 2.68 g, 0.900 fine silver, 21 mm diameter.
