This specimen was lot 303 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 35 (Winter Park, FL, May 2024), where it sold for $390. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS (United), Zeeland, "lion" daalder, 1624, rare. Bold full date, high-grade details with traces of minor corrosion, deeply toned all over, rated R2 in Delmonte. With generic certificate from the salvor. Recovered from: Campen, sunk in 1627 off the Isle of Wight, south of England." Lion daalders were struck in most of the provinces that today make up the Netherlands. This type is recorded in the SCWC for Zeeland for 1606-1658. This type overlaps the prinsen rijksdaalder of 1606-58, the silver ducat of 1659-68 and the ducaton of 1660-73, all struck to different standards. Most dates are common but choice specimens are rare as striking quality was low.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 22.77 grams.
Catalog reference: Dav-4872; KM-16; Delm-839.
