This specimen was lot 30026 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hamburg. Free City gold 10 Mark 1896-J MS64 NGC, Hamburg mint, Choice for the grade with unusually vibrant golden color over the obverse and reverse that immediately pleases the eye upon first sight. While considered a common type, examples as appealing as the present are certainly the exception to the norm. From The Kaiser Collection of German Gold Coins." This type was struck 1890-1913 while Hamburg was part of the Empire, the collapse of which ended the last local coinages.
