Aureo sale 261, lot 518

This specimen was lot 518 in Aureo y Calicó sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €170 (about US$273 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1797. Carlos IV. Madrid. MF. 1 escudo. Pátina. MBC/MBC+. (Charles IV, 1788-1808, one escudo of 1797, Madrid mint, toned, very fine or better.)"

This type was struck for Spain in Madrid 1788-1801 and 1807 and is common. Assayer MF is recorded for 1788-1800.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.875 fine gold, .098 troy oz AGW.
