This specimen was lot 46 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $39,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold cob 2 escudos, 1748 R, very rare, NGC MS 65, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Caballero, ex-Almenara. Lustrous and very deeply struck with sharp details that lack any flattening or wear at all (hence the grade, far beyond any Ferdinand VI cob 2 escudos on record), the choice full pillars-and-waves well centered and the equally choice full cross-lions-castles just enough off-center to allow a visible FERDIN- of the king's name in the legend, traces of toning here and there. Pedigreed to the Caballero de las Yndias Collection (Aureo & Calicó auction of April 2009, lot 584) and to the ANE auction of March 1975 (lot 585), also pedigreed to the Almenara Collection (both stated on label)." This type was struck 1747-49 only. All dates are rare.
Recorded mintage: 837 (assayers R and V).
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 6.67 grams.
