The specimen shown is an example of a type struck in France. France began minting euros in 1999. The obverse image is loosely based on the iconic La Semuese of Oscar Roty. The treaty which established the euro in 1999 gave specifications for the one cent thru two euro coins which are legal tender throughout the European Union. Higher denominations are not legal tender and each country is free to issue commemoratives as it sees fit, a right the Paris mint has ruthlessly exploited.
Recorded mintage: 180,717,000 + 175,000 for collector sets.
Specification: 4.07 g., Brass, 19.7 mm. Obv: The seed sower divides date and RF by Laurent Jorio after Oscar Roty; Rev: Denomination and globe by Luc Luycx; Edge: grooved.
Catalog reference: Gad-4a, KM 1285.
