Stack's Bowers 2020 NYINC sale, lot 20337
France SB120-20337r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20337 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 100 Euros, 2003. Paris Mint. PCGS PROOF-68 Deep Cameo Gold Shield. An impressive and RARE issue weighing 5 ounces of 0.999 fine gold, this reflective specimen is accompanied by its tag of authenticity indicating that it is #72. A brilliant and highly attractive piece." This NCLT was accompanied by a silver twenty euro (KM 2004). The treaty which established the euro in 1999 gave specifications for the one cent thru two euro coins which are legal tender throughout the European Union. Higher denominations are not legal tender and each country is free to issue commemoratives as it sees fit, a right the Paris mint has ruthlessly exploited.

Recorded mintage: 99.

Specification: 155.55 g, 0.999 fine gold, 5 oz AGW, 50 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-761; KM-2005.
