Steve Album sale 51, lot 2897

This specimen was lot 2897 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE: Republic, AV/AR 5 euro, 2003, The Sower // Map of Europe, bimetal, gold insert into silver base, mintage of only 2,504 pieces, PCGS graded Proof 69 DCAM, S." The treaty which established the euro in 1999 gave specifications for the one cent thru two euro coins which are legal tender throughout the European Union. Higher denominations are not legal tender and each country is free to issue commemoratives as it sees fit, a right the Paris mint has ruthlessly exploited. We follow the auctioneers in attributing this to KM 1347 even tho that catalog number does not mention a 2003 issue and the 2002 issue depicted therein has a different reverse.

Recorded mintage: 2,504 proofs.

Specification: 24.9 g, bimetallic (22.2 g silver/2.7 g gold), 37 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: cf. KM-1347, N-55736.
