This specimen was lot 1634 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,762.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. Cent, 1885. NGC MS-62 BN. Scarce date. Sharply struck with traces of mint red." The type was introduced in 1872-83 after the Straits Settlements were made a separate crown colony and is scarce in nice condition despite the large mintage. It was converted to bronze for the 1884-86 issue (KM 9a) and given a reeded edge for the 1887-1900 issue (KM 16).
Recorded mintage: 7,412,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 9.3 g, copper, 29 mm diameter, plain edge.
Catalog reference: KM-9a; Tan-SSC16.
