Stephen Album sale 32, lot 1331
Papal St SA32-1331r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1331 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it sold for $94. The catalog description[1] noted, "PAPAL STATES: Pius IX, 1846-1878, AR 5 soldi, 1867-R year XXI, PCGS graded MS63." After centuries of using a medieval mix of doppie, zecchini, giulii, grossi, etc., the coinage was reformed in 1830 to use 100 baiocchi = one scudo. The coinage was reformed again in 1866 to use centesimi and lire. The Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended. This five soldi, struck 1866-67, was one quarter of a lira.

Recorded mintage: 1,919,508 (including year XXII).

Specification: 1.25 g, 0.835 fine silver, 16.2 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-1375, Gig-313, Ber-3344.
