This specimen was lot 30763 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carl XIV Johan gold Ducat 1830-CB MS63 NGC. A solid example of this type with honey-gold surfaces that present lightly-reflective fields and crisply-struck details. Choice and very appealing with a mintage of just 5,269 pieces." Ducats of various types were issued in Sweden throughout the nineteenth century until 1868. Collecting Swedish coins is complicated by the multiple currency reforms the country underwent during the period. This type is listed for 1830-34 and is rare. Carl XIV Johan was originally Charles Bernadotte, one of Napoleon's generals. He married into the Swedish royal family and became king himself in 1818. The present dynasty is descended from him.
Recorded mintage: 5,269.
Specification: 3.49 g, .976 fine gold, .109 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: Fr-87, KM 628
