Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 32061
SB822-32061r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32061 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $180,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Entrancing William & Mary 5 Guineas, GREAT BRITAIN. 5 Guineas, 1692. London Mint. William III & Mary II. NGC MS-63. Though the holder prevents a determination of this Choice piece emanating from year four or five, it is of little consequence, as the overall quality presented here is undoubtedly stunning and impressive. Very few examples of this large gold denomination have survived to this day in such an immaculate state of preservation, with this specimen offering intense brilliance and allure. Meanwhile, the strike is quite sharp and exacting, with a pale golden hue observed throughout. Undoubtedly, a capstone coin for any advanced collection of British milled issues, or world gold coinage in general. EXCEEDIN[GL]Y RARE this attractive and exquisite. From the Augustana Collection." This type was struck 1691-94 and all dates are rare. Other five guineas (Fr-300) exist with an elephant and castle below the bust.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 41.75 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: S-3422; Fr-299; KM-479.1.
