Künker sale 264, lot 3166

This specimen was lot 3166 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €46,000 (about US$59,423 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VEREINIGTES KÖNIGREICH William III und Mary, 1688-1694. 5 Guineas 1692 (4. Regierungsjahr), London. GVLIELMVS · ET · MARIA · DEI · GRATIA Beider Büsten nebeneinander r. darunter Münzzeichen Elefant und Burgtor//MAG · BR · FR · ET · HIB · - REX · ET · REGINA Gekröntes, vierfeldiges Wappen, in der Mitte Löwenschild von Nassau, oben die geteilte Jahreszahl · 16 - 92 ·. Mit Randschrift: · ¹ · DECVS · ET · TVTAMEN · · ANNO · REGNI · QVARTO. GOLD. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Goldpatina, kl. Randfehler, vorzüglich . (United Kingdom, William and Mary, 1688-94, five guineas of 1692 (regnal year 4), London mint. Obverse: conjoined busts, elephant below; reverse: crowned, quartered arms, with the escutcheon of Nassau, dividing the date. Lettered edge. Very rare, especially in this quality. Attractive example, fine gold color, a few rim bumps, extremely fine.)"

This expensive type, struck 1691-94, also comes without an elephant privy mark under the busts, indicating African gold (see Fr-299).
