from Schulman sale 344, lot 245

This specimen was lot 245 in Schulman sale 344 (Amsterdam, March 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"2 gulden. 1696. Staande Nederlandse maagd, cursief jaartal in de afsnede. Kz. generaliteitswapen met opgevulde kroon tussen waarde 2 – GL en met titel …BELG: FRI:. Zeer scherp exemplaar. Prachtig. (two gulden of 1696. Standing Dutch maid, date below; reverse: crowned arms of the Generality divides the denomination. Very sharp example, extremely fine."

This is a one year type from the province of Friesland. Double gulden are also recorded from Gelderland (KM 66, 67, 69), Holland (KM 57, 62, 75), Overijssel (KM 62) and Westfriesland (KM 82) but the denomination doesn't seem to have caught on.

Recorded mintage: 26,796.

Specification: 21.2 g, .920 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Delm-1157; V. 126.3, KM 53.
