This coin was minted in Mexico City as the second year of a type struck 1947-48. It was the first silver coin larger than a peso struck since the independence centennial two pesos of 1921. The portrait of Aztec emperor Cuauhtémoc was reused on the fifty centavos of 1955-59 and 1964-83. Later issues of the fifties were smaller.
