Mexico 1948 peso
The first specimen was lot 71649 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Peso, 1948-Mo. Mexico City Mint. PCGS MS-66. Tied with just three other examples for the top spot in the PCGS census, this Gem presents a rather alluring nature to its peripheral toning, all while being paired with tremendous cartwheel luster." This type was issued in large numbers 1947-48. A small quantity was made in 1949 but never officially released. Of course, a few got out and are now famous rarities. The next issue of pesos was only .300 fine.
Recorded mintage: 22,915,000.
Specification: 14 g, 0.500 fine silver, 32 mm diameter.
