Sincona sale 73, lot 1151

This specimen was lot 1151 in Sincona sale 73 (Zurich, November 2021), where it sold for 150 CHF (about US$193 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Northeim, Stadt. 6 Mariengroschen 1671. Sehr schön. (Germany, city of Northeim, six mariengroschen of 1671. Very fine.)"

Northeim is a town in Lower Saxony, Germany, seat of the district of Northeim, with, in 2011, a population of 29,000. It lies on the German Half-Timbered House Road. In the seventeenth century, it was part of Brunswick-Luneburg. It was not a free city and did not have the mint right but the dukes permitted it to strike small change for local circulation. This type was struck 1669-72.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 5.72 g.

Catalog reference: KM 38, Mertens 120 b.
