Jean Elsen sale 111, lot 994

This specimen was lot 994 in Jean Elsen sale 111 (Brussels, December 2011), where it sold for 1,450 euro (about US$2,231 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, SILESIE-LIEGNITZ-BRIEG, Georg III, Ludwig IV et Christian (1639-1663), AV ducat, 1659, Brieg. Droit : B. des trois frères de face, en cuirasse. Revers : Ecu ovale surmonté de trois heaumes. Provient de notre vente 40, 17 juin 1995, 280. Provient de notre vente 40, 17 juin 1995, 280. presque Superbe. (Germany, Silesia-Liegnitz-Brieg, George III, Louis IV and Christian (co-rulers 1639-63), gold ducat of 1659, Brieg mint. Obverse: facing armored busts of the three brothers. Reverse: oval arms, three helmets above. From our sale 40 (June 1995), lot 280. Nearly extremely fine.)"

This type is listed for 1653-62 and is fairly common for a ducat of the period. Silesia is considered a German State even tho the province was then under Austrian rule and is now in Poland.
