Sincona sale 94, lot 1685
Liegnitz and Brieg in 1648, with Breslau in between

This specimen was lot 1685 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 2,800 CHF (about US$3,881 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Schlesien-Liegnitz-Brieg, Herzogtum. Georg, Ludwig und Christian, 1639-1663. Dukat 1658, Brieg. Münzmeister Christian Pfahler. Wardein Elias Weiss. Vorzüglich. Kleine Prüfspur am Rand. (Germany, duchy of Silesia-Liegnitz-Brieg, Extremely Fine, Small test mark on edge.)"

Silesia is considered a German State even tho the province was then under Austrian rule and is now in Poland. The three brothers, Ludwig, Georg and Christian, issued a series of gold coins 1651-62 but thereafter each brother issued his own. This type is listed for 1653-62 and is fairly common for a ducat of the period.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, 20 mm diameter, this specimen 3.45 g.

Catalog reference: KM 525, F.u.S. 1767. Fr-3200.
