This specimen was lot 31660 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Joseph II gold 2 Ducat 1777 E-HG MS63 NGC, Karlsburg mint. A stunning example of this issue and rare this fine. The strike is exemplary and has left moderately reflective fields in contrast to frosty devices with few noteworthy marks. Superb." Like most double ducats, this type, listed for 1777-80, is scarce. Altho Friedberg lists this under Hungary, we have followed the SCWC and filed it under Austria. The Karlsburg mint is the only mint which struck double ducats using this uniformed bust of Joseph II. Single ducats are known from multiple mints.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: 7 g, 0.986 fine gold, .221 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: Huszar-1831, Fr-191 (Hungary), KM 1869 (Austria).
