This specimen was lot 2358 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "FINLAND. 50 Pennia, 1890-L. NGC PROOF-66 CAMEO. RARE proof issue. This example being the only one for this date certified by NGC or PCGS. Flashing brilliant fields are graced with delicate bamboo and robin's egg toning and contrast nicely with the frosted razor sharp devices. An attractive top shelf piece fully worthy of its gem status." This type is listed for 1872-76, 1889-93, 1907-17 and was struck for Finland by the czarist administration. Russian defeats in World War One enabled the Finns, who had long chafed under Russian rule, to declare independence.
Recorded mintage: 693,000 (no proofs are noted in the SCWC).
Specification: 2.549 g, 0.750 fine silver, .061 troy oz ASW.
