Sincona sale 78, lot 387

This specimen was lot 387 in Sincona sale 78 (Zurich, October 2022), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$959 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA | Russian Empire and Federation | Paul I. 1796-1801, Polupoltinnik 1798, Mints in St. Petersburg, SM MB. 1.5 roubles according to Petrov. Very fine-extremely fine." The SCWC records this product of the St. Petersburg mint (СПБ) for 1798-99 and 1801. The type is much scarcer than the contemporary rubles (Dav-1688). The denomination was terminated in 1810, to be superseded by the twenty-five kopeks in 1827.

Recorded mintage: 88,000 (all mintmasters).

Specification: 5.18 g, 0.868 fine silver, this specimen 5.15 g.

Catalog reference: KM C98.1a, Bitkin 65 (R).
