Goldberg sale 116, lot 1531
GB G116-1531r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1531 in Goldberg sale 116 (Los Angeles, June 2020), where it sold for $48. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Silver Penny, 1845. Victoria. Toned. Choice Uncirculated." Altho the silver penny had been struck since the Middle Ages, its shrinkage and the availability of larger denominations made it obsolete by the eigteenth century. Boulton and Watt's introduction of the machine struck copper penny in 1797 consigned the silver penny to irrelevance and it was struck thereafter only for the Maundy sets. This type was struck 1838-87 for the sets only.

Recorded mintage: 7,920 for the Maundy sets.

Specification: 0.47 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: S.3920; KM-727.
