Jean Elsen sale 143, lot 1737

This specimen was lot 1737 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €340 (about US$444 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GRANDE-BRETAGNE, Victoria (1837-1901), AV souverain à l'écu, 1845. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of Great Britain, Victoria, 1837-1901, gold sovereign, shield reverse, of 1845. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This bust was used on the sovereign, or one pound coin, 1838-64 with a slightly modified type (KM 736.2) extending until 1874.

Recorded mintage: 3,801,000.

Specification: 7.98 g, 0.917 fine gold.
