Australia 1912-H penny

Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74131

This specimen was lot 74131 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $384. The catalog description^[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Penny, 1912-H. Birmingham (Heaton) Mint. George V. PCGS MS-64 Red Brown. A pleasing, well-struck Penny with bright luster in the peripheral lettering. From the Richard Margolis Collection." The silver coinage for Australia commenced in 1910 but bronze pennies and halfpennies were not struck until 1911. As such, none were struck with the effigy of Edward VII. This product of the Heaton mint is common but expensive in nice condition. The Heaton mint also struck pennies in 1915.

Recorded mintage: 3,600,000 plus proofs, a fairly common date.
