This specimen was lot 73527 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "SRI LANKA. 25 Cents, 2001. Kings Norton Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63 Gold Shield. KM 141a. The only example of the date seen at PCGS, this choice piece features mirrored surfaces and an intense prooflike nature. Definitely the most difficult date in this four year series. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." In 1972, Ceylon dropped its membership in the British Commonwealth and changed its name to Sri Lanka, which name is still in use. This type was struck in 1996, 2001, 2002 and 2004. It was superseded by a copper-plated steel coin (KM 141.2b) for 2005-06). This example would be worthless were it not from the King's Norton Mint collection of specimens.
Recorded mintage: 10,000,000.
Specification: nickel plated steel.
Catalog reference: KM 141a.
