Sedwick sale 25, lot 20

This specimen was lot 20 in Sedwick sale 25 (Winter Park, FL, May 2019), where it sold for $11,305. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, cob 8 escudos, 1747V, NGC MS 63, finest known in NGC census. Thick (small) flan with choice full cross-lions-castles and pillar-and-waves (both well centered), lightly toned and impressively lustrous for the period, finest by three grades in NGC census. NGC #3641317-002." This type is recorded for 1747-50. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.

Recorded mintage: 76,228.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW, this specimen 27.0 grams.
