Goldberg sale 93, lot 2162

This specimen was lot 2162 in Goldberg sale 93 (Los Angeles, September 2016), where it sold for $76.37. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Great Britain. 3 Pence, 1772 NGC MS62. George III. Large lettering and three variety. Haymarks, lightly toned and lustrous. NGC graded MS-62." This type is listed for 1762-72 and 1780-86. Many were included in the Maundy sets and thereby saved. The mint did not produce near enough small change for the industrial boom of the eighteenth century, leading to a proliferation of private tokens. The situation would not be rectified until the reform of 1817.
