This specimen was lot 74055 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Vatican City. 50 Centesimi, 1939 Year I. Rome Mint. Pius XII. NGC MS-67. Tied with just one other example, this exceptional minor radiates with great brilliance and allure throughout." This type was issued 1939 only for Pius XII, the second pope to rule over the newly independent Vatican City. It is common. The 1940 issue was converted to stainless steel and then terminated in 1946.
