Pomerania in 1648, with Stralsund opposite the island of Rugen

This specimen was lot 4470 in Sincona sale 4 (Zurich, October 2011) where it sold for 3,100 CHF (about US$4,124 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Stralsund, Stadt Dukat 1666, mit Titel Leopolds I., geprägt unter Karl XI. von Schweden. Strahl, umher Lorbeerkranz mit der Jahreszahl im Feld. Rv. Gekrönter Doppeladler. Selten. Etwas gewellt, sonst fast vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Stralsund, ducat of 1666, struck in the name of emperor Leopold while under Swedish rule. Obverse: arrowhead, laurel wreath around, date in field; reverse: crowned double headed eagle. Rare, slightly wavy, nice extremely fine)."

Stralsund, in the duchy of Pomerania, was a member of the Hanseatic League but fell under Swedish rule 1637-1815, when the port passed to Prussia. While some of the minors are listed fairly inexpensively, all the gold coins are rare.
