Stralsund 1640-CS thaler Dav-5835
This specimen was lot 1365 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,887 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"STRALSUND, STADT, Unter Schweden. Christina, 1637-1654. Reichstaler (32 Schilling) 1640, mit Titel Ferdinands III. Attraktives, sehr schönes Exemplar. (Germany, city of Stralsund, under Swedish rule, Christina, 1637-54, thaler of 1640, struck in the name of Ferdinand III. Attractive, very fine example.)"
This type was issued 1640-49, 1652, 1655 and 1657. Stralsund, in the duchy of Pomerania, was a member of the Hanseatic League but fell under Swedish rule 1637-1815, when the port passed to Prussia. While some of the minors are listed fairly inexpensively, all the thalers are rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
