In 1867 the silver coinage was redesigned to adopt the portrait of the emperor Pedro II, who already appeared on the [[Brazil 1853 20000 reis|gold coinage]]. The type went thru several minor modifications before settling on the final type shown here, struck 1876-89. Most of the fourteen dates of the type are reasonably available; this one is the most common.
